I mostly work solo, alone in the studio, and I want to share some of the practices I’ve developed to maintain concentration and get out of autopilot. This can mean turning a session “upside down” — starting by going straight into performance mode and doing warm-up practices at the end. Or staying alert to form through the warm-up itself. How do you get “out of yourself” and into new places? For me, working with the voice is key. Massage also becomes part of the sessions.
Steffi Lund was educated at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, School for New Dance Development (1984–1988). She is based in Oslo and on Nesodden. Since completing her studies, she has been in continuous production of her own work. As of 2022, she has created approximately 40 original works and has been co-responsible for a similar number of collaborative projects.
The solo format is her primary medium. She works in an intimate, chamber-scale format, spanning the full range from improvisation to fully composed works, often incorporating experimental use of voice and, in recent years, her own stage texts. Her work moves fluidly between dance, theatre, and performance, and includes several explicitly queer projects. On some occasions, she has worked as a co-creating performer.
She is a recipient of the Norwegian Government’s ten-year grant for established artists and received the Performing Artists’ Fund Honorary Award (Rolf Gammleng Prize) in 2015.
