About the event
In these classes, we will think of the body and the voice as one instrument. We’ll dance and sing at the same time. Beginning with images and information about the internal anatomy of the voice, we will take a guided movement and voice explorations to acquaint ourselves with the sensations of sound making. Bringing articulation to the voice, we will learn songs and vocal compositions and pair them with movement. We will explore pitch and harmony through sensation, listening to ourselves and others. From this base, we’ll move into choreographic and compositional games, exercises and propositions. If you’ve ever felt nervous about singing, don’t worry! These classes will use a movement approach to understanding and using your voice, and aims to bring confidence and clarity to
singing.
Hannah Parsons (UK) is a queer dance and vocal artist living and working in Oslo, and working
across Europe. Hannah’s performance practice explores voice and sound, applying a
choreographic approach to sound, and a sonic approach to movement making. She regularly
collaborates as a choreographer and performer with the collectives, STICKY Productions (NO)
and Unbaptised Infants (ES/UK). In 2024 STICKY Productions will tour their work Økohelter
through DNN and premiere their new work, OOZE at Bærum Kulturhus.
Her approach to dancing brings together improvisation and somatic practices like experiential
anatomy with postmodern compositional techniques as well as performative exuberance to
create performance environments that are immersive, tactile and other-wordly, allowing
audiences proximity to imagination and playfulness. Notably, they have recently had training
with vocal practitioners Josefina Rozenwasser, Jamie McCarthy and Carolina Mendonca,
encouraging a deeper practice in vocal and sound exploration. Her interest is synthesising
these practises to turn the body into a single instrument of sound and movement.
As a performer she has most recently toured France and Luxembourg with Simone Mousset in
‘Empire of a Faun Imaginary’, and in the UK with Elinor Lewis on the work ‘TIMBER’. She has
previously worked as a performer for artists including Marina Abramovic, Martin Creed, Sylvia
Whiteman, Joe Garbett, and Seke Chimutengwende, amongst others. Hannah has performed
at galleries including the Tate, the Hayward Gallery, the Serpentine, La Casa Encendida
(Madrid), and Artium (Basque Country), and theatres Sadler’s Wells, Les Hivernales (Avignon),
Dansens’ Hus (Oslo). Hannah graduated from Laban with a BA in Contemporary Dance in 2014.
