Our new lab is devoted to deepening our understanding of improvisational dance. Each lab will be facilitated by a different dance artist who is engaged in improvisational practice.

DESCRIPTION 

The Inner Flamingo Workshop is about (re-) connecting to the sensation and pleasure of moving and performing. We explore many tools to get out of our comfort zone and into a headspace of surprise and play. What is in this moment? How can I explore it and how do I choose to enter and sustain the moment?

We use a positive psychology approach in order to facilitate action and reduce inhibition.

The goal of the workshop is to cultivate the psychology required to generate solo and duets of increasingly longer durations and to widen the performative palate to include voice and character.

BIO 

Benedikte Onarheim-Smith has a BA in Contemporary dance from KHIO and has worked as a freelance dancer, teacher, choreographer, and dance producer in Norway and in New Zealand since 2009. She created En Kveld, which curated works in progress at Scenehuset from 2011 - 2018. This provided a framework for choreographers to take risks, test ideas and get audience feedback. This was the birthplace for This Piece Won't Change The World, which was later developed into a full length and prize winning work in New Zealand.   Together with her husband Matthew Onarheim-Smith formed the dance company Kiwigians Inc.

Benedikte has taught the Inner Flamingo Workshop in New Zealand for Footnote Dance Company and Movement Art Practice and recently for KHIO
